Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed that the state has empowered over 30,000 women and youths in its 19 skills acquisition centres within just five years, according to IReporter Online.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for 5,309 students from the 2024/2025 session of the state’s skills acquisition programmes under the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), the governor noted that these initiatives were designed to equip young entrepreneurs with vital skills and tools to launch their own businesses.

He stressed that entrepreneurship remains one of the most effective tools for combating poverty.

The graduands, trained in diverse skills such as vulcanising, welding, aluminium fabrication, carpentry, photography, catering, hairdressing, bead and hat making, gele tying, and makeup artistry, also received start-up kits and certificates.

“This graduation ceremony reflects vision, commitment, and the immense potential of our graduates,” Sanwo-Olu said, highlighting that over 30,000 students have passed through the centres in the last five to six years, according to IReporter Online.

First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, described the empowerment as the start of a brighter future, urging the beneficiaries to keep retraining, set goals, and stay proactive in adapting to industry trends.

She encouraged them to use their skills to create value and become job creators.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Bolaji Dada, praised the resilience of the trainees, noting that the figure represented 5,309 fresh opportunities for economic growth and poverty reduction across Lagos State, according to IReporter Online.
