In a tragic turn of events, a gas explosion rocked Star Road, by Horizon Heights, Ikate-Elegushi, Lekki, engulfing residential makeshift structures and causing extensive damage to property worth millions of naira.

Eyewitnesses reported the incident occurring around 11 p.m., with flames raging into the early hours of Monday. Quick responses from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and other emergency teams prevented further spread to adjacent properties.

The inferno, fueled by 62 gas cylinders discovered on the scene, was finally quenched around 1 a.m., followed by a mop-up operation to assess the extent of the devastation, which continued until 3 a.m.

While no lives were lost, two individuals sustained injuries and received treatment from LASAMBUS, confirmed Margaret Adeseye, Director of Lagos Fire and Rescue Service. Preliminary investigations pointed to negligence as the cause of the fire.

Despite ongoing evacuation efforts, the toll of destruction includes homes, valuables, and cash, amplifying the urgent need for fire safety awareness.

This incident underscores the importance of proactive measures, prompting recent safety campaigns launched by Lagos authorities to mitigate fire risks, especially during the Harmattan season.
