List Of Documents Atiku Requested From Chicago State University Concerning Tinubu

A U.S. court has granted an order to postpone the enforcement of a prior directive for Chicago State University to release President Bola Tinubu’s academic records to Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate.

During an emergency hearing on Thursday, District Judge Nancy Maldonado of the Northern Illinois, Eastern Division, approved a delay in the order requiring Chicago State University to furnish President Tinubu’s academic records.

This decision offers respite to both Chicago State University and Mr. Tinubu, as they vigorously oppose the release of the requested documents.

However, this ruling poses a setback for Atiku, who is racing against time to secure the documents for his ongoing legal challenge against Mr. Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 Nigerian election.

Both the Nigerian and U.S. proceedings have garnered international interest.

Mr. Tinubu swiftly filed an emergency motion to prevent Chicago State University (CSU) from disclosing his academic records to Atiku.

Earlier in the week, the U.S. court instructed Chicago State University to provide Atiku with “all relevant and non-privileged documents” within two days.

Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert, overseeing the hearing, mandated CSU to release the documents to Atiku by Thursday’s end.

However, Mr. Tinubu urged the court to postpone the execution of that order until at least Monday, September 25.

In their emergency motion, Mr. Tinubu’s lawyers requested a review of the magistrate judge’s decision by a district judge, a request that Ms. Maldonado granted on Thursday.

Ms. Maldonado directed both sides’ lawyers to submit additional arguments by next Thursday, September 28.

Recognizing the legal deadlines in the Nigerian Supreme Court, she assured a swift ruling following that date, stating, “I will have a busy weekend. The issue is of process and rules. I’m a rule person; that’s why I’m a judge. This case is quite involved. I am aware of the stakes. It’s more important to me to get this right,” as reported by CBS news.

Atiku, Mr. Tinubu’s political rival, alleged that documents indicating Mr. Tinubu’s graduation from Chicago State in 1979 are not genuine, providing grounds to contest Mr. Tinubu’s election victory earlier this year.

The university asserts it can verify the president’s graduation from CSU. However, it cannot authenticate the diploma certificate in question because it is a ceremonial document, not part of an official student academic file.

After coming in second to Mr. Tinubu in February’s election, Atiku challenged the result at the Presidential Election Petition Court. Although this challenge was dismissed, Atiku has filed an appeal against the judgment at the Supreme Court.

During Thursday’s hearing before the U.S. district judge, Chicago State University lawyer Michael Hayes expressed the university’s desire for clarity and willingness to provide the requested documents once legal matters are settled. He stated, “We don’t have a dog in this fight,” adding that the university has incurred substantial legal fees and unwarranted negative public perception due to the political dispute in a foreign country.

Below are the Documents requested by Atiku;

The former vice president requested four documents from Chicago State University:

(2) Mr Tinubu’s diploma issued in 1979.

(3) Any example of a Chicago State University diploma that “contains the same font, seal, signatures, and wording as contained in Exhibit C to the First Liu Declaration, which purports to be a CSU diploma issued to Mr Tinubu on or about June 22, 1979.”

(4) CSU documents certified and produced by Jamar Orr, an associate general counsel at CSU at the time.
