Look Out For Prices Of Rice, Beans, And Other Food Items In Abuja As Ramadan Begins

According to investigations conducted by Daily Trust, the renowned Abaji Main Market has witnessed a notable hike in the prices of various food commodities, including rice, beans, yam, garri, maize, and others.
Previously, a mudu of rice, priced at N1,800, is now being sold at N2,000, while a mudu of beans has risen from N1,400 to N1,600 per mudu. Similarly, a medium-sized yam tuber now commands a price of N1,300, up from its former price.
Grounded corn, previously sold at N900 per mudu, has surged to N1,200 per mudu, reflecting the widespread inflation affecting the market.
Moreover, bulk purchases of yam tubers have experienced a significant price hike, with 50 medium-size yam tubers soaring from N75,000 to N115,000.
The spike in food prices extends to soup ingredients such as palm oil, vegetable oil, Maggi cubes, and salt sachets, all witnessing a 95% increase in cost.
Expressing dismay over the inflated prices, some customers at the market lamented that certain traders were capitalizing on the Ramadan season to exploit consumers.
Zuwaira Adamu, a buyer, condemned the unjustified price surge, stating, “It is quite unfortunate that some traders have taken advantage of Ramadan to increase their goods, especially foodstuffs, by 90 percent, which is bad.”
Similarly, Usman Yakubu, another foodstuff buyer, criticized market authorities for their silence on the issue, suggesting complicity in the price manipulation. He remarked, “I am telling you confidently that those in charge of Abaji market have always compromised as they know what is happening on price increase but they kept quiet without saying anything because they receive kickbacks.”
