Manhunt Begins: EFCC Declares Ex-Abia Commissioner Enweremadu Wanted Nationwide

In a notice signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC listed Enweremadu’s last known address as the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Umuahia, Abia State, and appealed to the public to provide useful information about his whereabouts.

“The public is hereby notified that CHRISTOPHER ENWEREMADU, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with an alleged case of criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, stealing, and money laundering,” the statement read.

Enweremadu, who served under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, has been under investigation over the management of funds allocated to the 17 local government councils in Abia.

In December 2024, a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja ordered the EFCC to probe allocations to the state’s LGAs between 2019 and 2023. The court also directed the seizure of international passports belonging to Enweremadu, Erondu Uchenna Erondu (a former aide to Ikpeazu), and Deaconess Joy Nwanju, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

The court’s order followed an ex parte application by an activist who alleged that billions of naira meant for the LGAs were diverted under their supervision.

While the EFCC’s latest notice did not provide further details of the alleged transactions, it comes shortly after the agency declared Abdullahi Bashir Haske, an Adamawa-born businessman linked to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, wanted over similar allegations of conspiracy and money laundering.
