Minimum Wage: Tripartite Committee-Recommendations Can Address Workforce Challenges – Nigerian Govt

The Federal Government of Nigeria has stated that the report from the Tripartite Committee on the new minimum wage provides a balanced and realistic approach to addressing the numerous challenges faced by the nation’s workforce.

During a one-day retreat in Abuja on Monday, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, emphasized this point. The retreat, titled ‘Labour Reforms and the Quest for Living Wage in Nigeria: A Focus on Legislative Intervention,’ was organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) for the Chairmen and Members of the joint Senate and House Committees on Employment, Labour, and Productivity.

Onyejeocha described the committee’s submissions as a blueprint for actionable reforms aimed at driving sustainable improvements in labor conditions across the country.

She reiterated the current administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s labor landscape, ensuring that every worker is respected, protected, and fairly compensated.

Onyejeocha urged lawmakers to pass bills that reflect the aspirations of the country’s labor force, foster productivity and growth, and ensure that offenders and violators of labor laws are appropriately punished.

“The Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is unwavering in its dedication to ensuring that all workers are treated with dignity, work in safe environments, and earn a living wage. Our vision is clear: to create a labor market that is fair, equitable, and capable of sustaining the aspirations of every Nigerian worker,” Onyejeocha stated.

She highlighted the role of the Tripartite Committee, which includes representatives from the government, the organized private sector, and organized labor, in engaging with stakeholders on the critical issue of a new national minimum wage. The committee’s comprehensive submissions to the President reflect a balanced and realistic approach to addressing the myriad challenges faced by the workforce. These submissions are not just recommendations; they are a blueprint for actionable reforms that will drive sustainable improvements in labor conditions across the country.

One of the key initiatives of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment is the Labour and Employment Empowerment Program (LEEP), which embodies a holistic approach to labor reform, with a specific focus on labor reforms and compliance.

Onyejeocha also underscored the need for legislative intervention, highlighting the importance of the standing committees responsible for legislative oversight and the Parliament in enacting laws that protect and empower workers.
