In a statement released on Friday, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, the Director overseeing the Federal Capital Territory, affirmed the agency’s commitment to public safety.

The statement revealed that counterfeit rice was packaged using empty bags from well-known brands.

“During a significant operation, NAFDAC closed down eight rice shops and a warehouse in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. These establishments were involved in the production and distribution of fake rice, resulting in the seizure of over 1,600 bags valued at roughly ₦5 billion,” Azikiwe explained.

The raid also extended to the Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja, following orders from NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, aimed at protecting public health during the holiday season.

The operation uncovered counterfeit rice that had been repackaged in branded bags, including Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, deceiving unsuspecting consumers. The investigators also discovered empty bags bearing popular brand names at the Karu facility.

Mr. Azikiwe warned counterfeiters to abandon these illegal practices or face legal action, emphasizing that individuals arrested during the operation would be prosecuted to serve as a warning to others.
