His decision to switch parties comes in the aftermath of Philip Shaibu’s impeachment, marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

In an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” Omobayo shed light on his political trajectory, emphasizing his alignment with the PDP’s vision and his endorsement of Asue Ighodalo’s gubernatorial candidacy in the forthcoming Edo Governorship election scheduled for September 21.

His appointment as deputy governor is viewed as a strategic maneuver to bolster Ighodalo’s campaign against formidable opponents such as Olumide Akpata of the LP and Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reflecting on his stint with the Labour Party, Omobayo highlighted internal conflicts and a departure from the party’s core values during the 2023 elections. These issues, he revealed, contributed to his defeat in the race for the Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency seat in the Federal House of Representatives, prompting his departure from the LP.

Meanwhile, the ousted Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has vehemently contested his impeachment, denouncing it as a direct affront to democratic principles. Shaibu’s removal on April 8, 2024, severed his longstanding political alliance with Governor Godwin Obaseki, signaling a turbulent phase in Edo’s political narrative.
