Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje, the lawmaker representing Sakaba Constituency, has been elected as the new Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly following a unanimous decision by members of the legislature.

Legislative sources disclosed that the election took place during a plenary session held on Wednesday at the Assembly complex in Birnin Kebbi. The exercise was conducted to fill the leadership position left vacant by the death of the former Speaker, Mohammed Usman-Zuru.

The Clerk of the House, Sulaiman Shamaki, who presided over the session, explained that the Assembly acted in accordance with constitutional provisions that empower lawmakers to elect a new Speaker whenever the office becomes vacant.

The process commenced with the nomination of Maikasuwa-Dangoje by the member representing Ngaski Constituency, Adamu Birnin-Yauri. The nomination was subsequently seconded by Lawal Haruna, who represents Fakai Constituency. With no opposition from members, the House unanimously endorsed and elected him as Speaker.

In his acceptance remarks, Maikasuwa-Dangoje expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to provide inclusive leadership. He assured lawmakers of his commitment to fostering cooperation, transparency, and mutual understanding within the Assembly.

The new Speaker also emphasized the importance of strengthening unity among members and enhancing the legislature’s effectiveness in discharging its constitutional responsibilities. He further pledged to support the enactment of laws and policies aimed at improving governance and addressing the needs of residents across Kebbi State.

The leadership transition comes nearly two months after the death of former Speaker Mohammed Usman-Zuru, who passed away on April 7 in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
