New U.S. Consul General Lands In Lagos, Promises Stronger Bilateral Ties

The United States has announced the arrival of its new Consul General in Lagos, Rick Swart, marking a significant diplomatic transition in southern Nigeria.

Swart officially assumed duty on July 16, taking over from JoEllen Gorg, who had steered the U.S. Consulate in an acting capacity for the past seven months.

According to iReporter Online, Swart now serves as the senior U.S. Government representative to the 17 states across southern Nigeria. His role encompasses advancing U.S.-Nigeria bilateral priorities, strengthening trade and investment, and deepening people-to-people relationships throughout the region.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Swart said he was honored to serve in Nigeria and eager to explore the cultural richness and diverse communities across the southern region. “I am excited about the opportunity to travel across the region, meet the people, experience the culture, while advancing the shared goals of making our two countries safer, stronger, and more prosperous,” he stated.

According to iReporter Online, Swart brings with him a wealth of diplomatic experience, having held key foreign service roles across Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. Prior to his appointment in Lagos, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Chad and held previous posts as Chargé d’Affaires in Chad, Congo, and Burundi.

Swart praised his predecessor JoEllen Gorg for her exceptional leadership, commending her dedication in fostering strong ties with Nigerians. He emphasized his readiness to collaborate closely with Ambassador David Greene and the broader U.S. Embassy team in Abuja to enhance cooperation between both countries.

Before joining the State Department in 2002, Swart worked on major architectural and design projects in Africa and Asia and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali. His expansive career also includes humanitarian assignments and domestic postings in Washington, D.C., where he handled critical sub-Saharan African affairs.

According to iReporter Online, U.S. officials believe Swart’s arrival signals a renewed commitment to advancing the mutual interests of both nations at a time of evolving regional dynamics.
