New Year Crossover: Adamawa And Lagos Cancel December 31 Celebrations

New Year crossover celebrations scheduled for December 31 have been cancelled in Adamawa and Lagos states, as both governments announced precautionary measures ahead of the transition into 2026.

According to Ireporter Online, the Adamawa State Government has called off all Cross Over Night activities earlier planned to take place at the Unity Flyover in Jimeta, Yola, the state capital. The decision was disclosed in an official statement released on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou.

The state government explained that the cancellation was made in the interest of public safety and security, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains its foremost responsibility. It noted that all events scheduled between December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026, at the venue had been suspended.

The government further assured residents that it would continue to collaborate with security agencies to maintain peace and stability across the state. It also stated that members of the public would be promptly informed should there be any new developments.

As part of additional safety measures, residents—particularly those in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas—were advised to remain vigilant, avoid crowded locations, and promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

The development followed a similar announcement by the Lagos State Government, which confirmed the cancellation of the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta that was slated for December 31. The decision was conveyed in a statement issued after the approval of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Instead of the annual celebration popularly known as the Countdown to 2026, the governor urged Lagos residents to dedicate the period to personal prayers for the nation, the state, and its people. He encouraged citizens to pray for continued peace, prosperity, effective leadership, productivity, and overall well-being.

Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about the coming year, describing 2026 as one filled with promise for Lagos State and Nigeria at large. He extended warm New Year wishes to residents and called on them to continue living in peace and harmony as the year comes to a close.
