Nigeria Invites Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali to Economic Summit Despite ECOWAS Rift

Nigeria has invited Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic to participate in the 2025 West Africa Economic Summit, despite their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, announced on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Tuggar stated that although the three nations have exited ECOWAS, they remain vital economic allies within the sub-region. He emphasized that Nigeria sees their involvement as crucial to the region’s collective growth and prosperity.

“These nations are still our neighbours and partners,” Tuggar said. “Their departure from ECOWAS does not erase our shared history or mutual economic interests.”

He revealed that President Bola Tinubu had directed special envoys to personally deliver invitations to the summit, scheduled for June 20–21 at the renovated Abuja International Conference Centre.

The summit will bring together heads of state, top government officials, private sector leaders, development partners, and young innovators from across the region to explore trade, investment, and regional integration opportunities.

Tuggar explained that the summit’s vision transcends political alliances, focusing instead on deepening economic ties and fostering inclusive growth. He cited ongoing collaborations like the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission as proof that bilateral cooperation continues despite ECOWAS dynamics.

“Trade and development cannot be limited by political boundaries,” he said. “Nigeria continues to work with Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso on infrastructure and business ventures.”

Highlighting the importance of private sector and youth involvement, the minister described the summit as a strategic platform for long-term economic collaboration. Events will include a presidential roundtable, CEO forum, investment expos, and empowerment sessions for youth.

The initiative underscores Nigeria’s commitment to a peaceful, integrated, and economically vibrant West Africa.
