Nigerian Navy Sets Up Base in Kebbi, Targets Criminal Gangs on River Niger
Efforts to bolster national security and counter inland waterway threats have received a boost as the Nigerian Navy finalizes plans to establish a new base in Yauri, located in Kebbi State’s Yauri Local Government Area.
According to iReporter Online, a high-ranking naval delegation conveyed this development during a courtesy visit to Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. The delegation, led by Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, disclosed that the initiative aligns with the Nigerian Navy’s broader inland maritime strategy aimed at curbing insecurity and safeguarding critical waterways.
Rear Admiral Nwatu emphasized the strategic significance of the River Niger, describing it as a national asset that contributes significantly to agricultural and energy sectors. However, he expressed concern that criminal elements have exploited the river’s vast network to escalate insecurity, particularly in Nigeria’s northwest corridor.
He noted that the planned naval presence would not only enhance surveillance and operational control but also serve as a deterrent to cross-border criminal activities, especially given Kebbi’s proximity to both Benin and Niger Republics.
Governor Idris welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely and comprehensive response to persistent security threats affecting the southern part of the state. He acknowledged that Kebbi’s porous borders and the unstable security environment in neighboring countries have posed significant challenges for his administration.
Pledging the full support of the state government, Governor Idris assured the naval delegation that temporary facilities would be made available to fast-track the take-off of the base. He reiterated his commitment to providing an enabling environment for the naval personnel to function efficiently.
The proposed base is expected to enhance regional stability, safeguard trade routes, and boost inter-agency collaboration in one of Nigeria’s most security-sensitive zones.
