Nigerians React As Governor Obaseki Plans ₦70,000 Minimum-Wage In Edo State

In Benin City on Tuesday, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State disclosed that his administration had proactively prepared for a ₦70,000 minimum wage for state workers, anticipating economic challenges linked to federal fiscal policies.

Governor Obaseki made this revelation while receiving the Award for Exceptional Courage in Leadership from the Editorial Board of a magazine. He attributed the decision to foresight observed three years ago when he began expressing concerns about the Federal Government’s increasing borrowing, which he believed would strain the country’s financial stability.

According to Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Projects, strategic financial planning was crucial to ensuring the state could sustain its workforce amid looming economic uncertainties.

“We can pay the N70,000 minimum wage because we planned in the last three years knowing a day like this would come. Thank God we have been vindicated today, as our sincerity has helped us overcome every situation,” Governor Obaseki stated.

He highlighted the institutional reforms introduced to improve governance and manage the state’s resources transparently, emphasizing the support and endorsement of the majority of Edo people for his administration’s initiatives.

“As we approach the final months of our administration, we are committed to finishing strong. This week, I will establish my transition team to document all our achievements and projects for the next administration,” Governor Obaseki added.
