Nigeria’s Six Champions League Stars All Make It To Knockout Stage

According to reports from Ireporter Online, all six Nigerian footballers participating in the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League group stage have successfully guided their respective clubs into the knockout round, as Europe’s premier club competition concluded its opening phase on Wednesday, January 28.

Nigerian players made their presence felt across Europe, from Turkey to Italy, Belgium, Germany, Greece, and France, contributing in various capacities to ensure their teams’ progression to the next stage.

Victor Osimhen played a pivotal role for Galatasaray, helping the Turkish side secure a place in the knockout play-offs despite a challenging group campaign. The striker returned from injury in the final match against Manchester City, and although Galatasaray lost 2-0, Osimhen created several opportunities and consistently troubled City’s defense, demonstrating his value to the team.

Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman was the highest-ranked Nigerian in the standings, finishing the group phase in 15th place with 13 points. Lookman featured in their 1-0 defeat to Union Saint-Gilloise, contributing to Atalanta’s attack and helping the club secure qualification despite the loss.

Raphael Onyedika delivered a standout performance for Club Brugge, controlling midfield and orchestrating play in their decisive win over Marseille. His composure, defensive work, and passing accuracy were instrumental in ensuring Brugge’s progression.

Nathan Tella played a limited role for Bayer Leverkusen due to injury but was part of the squad that finished 16th with 12 points and advanced to the knockout round. Similarly, Bruno Onyemaechi contributed as a late substitute for Olympiacos, helping preserve a narrow victory against Ajax that secured the Greek champions’ progression.

George Ilenikhena made history with Monaco by becoming the youngest African player to reach 15 Champions League appearances, surpassing Kanu Nwankwo’s record. Monaco finished 21st with 10 points to advance, while Ilenikhena featured in three group-stage matches.

Not all Nigerians advanced, as Igoh Ogbu’s Slavia Prague were eliminated at the group stage. Ogbu remained a key performer in their final match, showcasing defensive composure despite a 4-1 defeat to Pafos.
