NNPP Makes U-Turn, Opts For Alliance Instead Of Presidential Race

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced that it will not field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, opting instead to pursue strategic alliances with other political parties as part of efforts to contribute to Nigeria’s political and economic development.

The position was disclosed by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Bala Mohammed, during the 11th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Saturday. He explained that the decision was reached after careful consideration of the nation’s current realities and the need to support a capable and credible leader who can effectively address the country’s challenges.

Mohammed stated that the party would evaluate presidential hopefuls emerging from other political platforms before deciding on any endorsement, stressing that collaboration among political parties has become increasingly important in the current political climate.

According to him, the NNPP is not under any obligation to present a presidential candidate merely for participation’s sake, noting that the party’s priority is to identify individuals with the competence, integrity and leadership capacity required to move the country forward.

The acting chairman also dismissed reports suggesting that the NNPP had already resolved to align with the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), maintaining that the party remains open to partnerships with any political organisation whose ideals and objectives are consistent with its own.

He further indicated that the departure of the party’s former presidential candidate played a role in the decision, recalling that the NNPP’s 2023 flagbearer was widely regarded within the party as a highly qualified and credible contender. Mohammed, however, wished the former candidate success in his future political endeavours.

The development signals a significant shift in the NNPP’s strategy ahead of the 2027 elections, with the party positioning itself as a potential kingmaker through coalition-building rather than direct participation in the presidential contest.
