The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has passed away following a battle with cancer.

The development was disclosed by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, during an event held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, where attendees observed a minute of silence in honour of the late senior police officer.

Speaking on the loss, Governor Otti expressed profound sadness over Uzuegbu’s death, describing him as a dedicated and hardworking officer who served the Nigeria Police Force and the nation with distinction. He noted that throughout his career, the late AIG demonstrated commitment, professionalism and unwavering dedication to duty.

The governor stated that Uzuegbu’s passing represents a significant loss not only to his immediate family but also to the police institution and the numerous individuals who worked closely with him during his years of service. He offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and asked for divine comfort and strength for his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones as they cope with the loss.

According to reports, the death of the senior police officer has cast a shadow of grief across the security community, particularly among personnel serving within Zone 9 of the Nigeria Police Force. The zone, headquartered in Umuahia, oversees police formations that operated under Uzuegbu’s leadership.

Colleagues, stakeholders and members of the police community have continued to pay tribute to the late AIG, describing his death as a painful loss and acknowledging his contributions to strengthening security operations and policing efforts within the zone.
