NRS Unveils Unified Tax ID System, Boosts Revenue Integration
According to Ireporter Online, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Nigeria Revenue Service), in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (Joint Revenue Board), has introduced a new taxpayer identification framework known as the Tax ID, which will now be mandatory for all taxable individuals across the country.
The initiative, which is backed by Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, is designed to modernise the country’s tax system by strengthening administration, enhancing transparency, and simplifying access to tax services for both individuals and businesses.
In a public notice released in Abuja on May 18, 2026, the agency explained that the Tax ID will function as a single, unified identity for taxpayers at both federal and state levels, effectively replacing multiple identification systems currently in use.
The notice further stated that the reform is intended to streamline processes such as tax registration, filing, and payment, while also improving the overall management and accuracy of taxpayer data nationwide.
Authorities noted that the unified system will help eliminate duplication of records, improve coordination among tax agencies, and enhance accountability within the revenue collection framework.
The statement also confirmed that the Tax ID will serve as a central identifier across ministries, departments, agencies, financial institutions, and other verification platforms, ensuring better harmonisation of taxpayer information.
As part of the transition, the new Tax ID system will replace the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) validation API currently used by MDAs, banks, and related institutions.
Organisations requiring integration or validation access have been directed to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the Joint Revenue Board, while corporate entities seeking API integration are to engage the Tax Automation Department of the Nigeria Revenue Service for further guidelines.
The NRS said the reform is part of broader government efforts to digitise and modernise tax administration in Nigeria, improve service delivery, and build a more efficient and transparent revenue system.
