Obi Critiques IGP’s Restrictions On Palliative Distribution, Warns Of Impact On Charity
Former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed his disapproval of the ban imposed by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun on the distribution of palliatives to the less fortunate, following a series of tragic stampedes across the nation…READ MORE…
Reports indicate that 67 individuals, including 35 children, lost their lives during stampedes at events in Ibadan, Oyo State; Okija, Anambra State; and Abuja.
In response to these unfortunate incidents, the IGP, through a statement from police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, cautioned event organizers to engage security agencies, stating that failure to do so would result in legal repercussions.
In a statement posted on X on Monday, Obi warned that these restrictions might deter philanthropists from reaching out to vulnerable communities, labeling it an unwarranted layer of bureaucracy for the IGP to demand permission before offering assistance to those in need.
He articulated his concerns, stating, “The recent directive from the Inspector General of Police regarding restrictions on distributing palliatives to those less privileged is concerning. While this directive seems to be a timely response to the series of tragedies across the country and reflects an honest attempt to tackle the challenges of ongoing economic hardship, it also carries the risk of abuse.
“This could dissuade citizens from helping those who are hungry and in distress. While I understand the importance of improved organization and public safety, it’s crucial that acts of goodwill are not obstructed by excessive bureaucracy.
“Instead of requiring permission from authorities to assist those in need, we should encourage citizens to develop better and more structured ways to provide help. The focus ought to be on enhancing coordination rather than imposing hurdles that might discourage much-needed acts of kindness during this time of widespread hunger, pain, and frustration.
“This is not the moment to hinder the spirit of compassion and generosity among our people. We should be channeling these efforts constructively, ensuring that support reaches the most vulnerable safely and efficiently.”
Obi also called on the Federal Government to tackle the fundamental causes of hardship and provide sustainable solutions, rather than erecting barriers for those trying to fill the void left by government policies.
“The government must do more to address the underlying issues contributing to this hardship, offering lasting solutions rather than obstructing those stepping in to alleviate the consequences of government’s ill-informed policies.
“I urge the IGP to promptly reconsider this directive, promoting collaboration and support rather than division and discouragement, as we collectively work to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
