Oh, PDP Is Gone!” – Akpabio Fires Fresh Shot At Opposition

According to reports monitored by Ireporter Online, the incident occurred while Akpabio was reading a defection letter submitted by former Governor of Sokoto State and serving senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. The letter confirmed Tambuwal’s move to the African Democratic Congress. During the announcement, the Senate President also referenced several resignation letters from members of minority caucuses, including lawmakers from the Labour Party (Nigeria).

While addressing the chamber, Akpabio briefly paused and appeared amused as he reflected on what he described as the state of opposition parties in the country. In a remark that has since sparked reactions online, he jokingly suggested that some of the parties had effectively collapsed.

“Oh, PDP is gone! Even the Labour Party is dead. I’ve read about three different political parties now,” he said while continuing to address lawmakers.

The Senate President further rejected suggestions that the crisis within opposition parties was being orchestrated by the ruling All Progressives Congress. Instead, he attributed the situation to internal leadership challenges within the parties themselves.

Akpabio argued that several opposition parties were struggling to maintain cohesion, noting that different political groups were experiencing similar difficulties. According to him, the ruling party could not be blamed for the internal problems affecting rival parties, adding that the developments were largely the result of their inability to manage their own affairs effectively.

He also expressed satisfaction that the political shifts were strengthening the ruling party’s position in the Senate, stating that the changes would further consolidate its majority status within the chamber.
