Why Tinubu’s National Leadership In APC Is Not A Fluke By Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah.
If you close your eyes to facts, you will learn through accidents- Congolese Proverb.
Experience they say is the best teacher, however, one does not have to undergo experiences personally to learn a lesson, lessons can be learnt through others as well.
There are two major sides to everything in life, the facts and the fiction, why we may choose to ignore the fiction and damn the results, the facts on the other hand are experiences to be learnt from and to see the facts and feign ignorance is more dangerous than leaving in self-denial, the consequences are dire.
It takes a lot to be a great leader and most times great sacrifices have to be made for the team to move ahead, many people erroneously think leadership is all about making money available to solve financial burdens, or for merry-making purposes for adherents.
The most legit type of sacrifice is one that can never be taken back, leadership at times involves spending your time, energy and comfort in order for everybody to be carried along.
Succinctly put, the best sacrifices a leader can make are personal sacrifices, you gain nothing from these sacrifices but those around you stand to win so much.
Of recent in an attempt to disparage Tinubu’s chances in the 2023 presidential elections a lot of stories that are unethical are being peddled by detractors all in an effort to make Tinubu look like a despot and dictator that has the economy of the country in his pockets.
If Tinubu is not falsely accused of unmentioned cases at EFCC or CCB the former Lagos State Governor would be portrayed as a ruthless Godfather who is building a personal empire.
But what are the facts? Tinubu’s rise to leadership was never a fluke.
The greatest trait of a leader is the division of power and authority between colleagues and followers. Good leaders never hoard power and always tend to distribute authority in order for the task ahead to be completed.
Long before Tinubu became the Lagos State Governor, precisely in 1992, Tinubu was the preferred candidate to emerge as the Senate President but seeing that his emergence as the Senate President would directly jeopardize the MKO presidency in 1993 he stepped down his ambition.
That is a rare quality in a Nigerian Leader although it is what is expected of great leaders, taking into cognizance that Nigeria runs antithetical to a SANE working country then that is indeed a feat.
Countdown to 2007 Tinubu had ready purchased the party’s form for the Senate, maybe he wanted to go back and complete his unfinished ambition of becoming the Senate President. But again he dropped his ambition after it was discovered that Obasanjo was hell-bent on snatching Lagos State from the Alliance for Democracy. Instead, he took the backstage and made sure AD retained Lagos State. Another selfless sacrifice.
Again Tinubu showed extraordinary exemplary leadership when he left the AD to form the Action Congress, by this time Atiku Abubarkar was running from pillar to post seeking a platform to contest the 2007 presidential elections after his boss, General Olusegun Obasanjo publicly declared him a persona non grata in PDP.
What did Tinubu do? Asiwaju without even contesting for anything in the party gave the platform to Atiku on a platter of Gold.
That was how Tinubu has been offering his structures out till when he finally hit it right with Buhari and the rest as they say is history.
A leader must be firm and stay true to his belief.
Which other leader in Nigeria you know that is as consistent and unshakeable in his belief as much as Tinubu? Many people can’t even face pressure but Tinubu has proved it times and over again that he remains a leader even under heavy pressure.
Crisis management.
Tinubu has always handled crisis like a true traditional leader, unbiased and fair to justice. Tinubu has been the fulcrum of the APC all these years and a major reason why many stakeholders stayed back in the party even in the face of obvious disparity.
We should stop leaving in delusion, Tinubu’s ascension as the National Leader Of the All Progressive Congress is not a fluke.
From day one, Tinubu has been a national leader from the days of the Alliance for Democracy, the Action Congress, the Action Congress of Nigeria and now the All Progressive Congress. At all parties, he was a co-founder.
Tinubu has shown from antecedents that he has paid his dues in helping to deepen democratic tenets in Nigeria, instead of being vilified he should be applauded for his exemplary leadership role, Tinubu deserves some accolades.
