Osun 2026: Soldiers Take Over Security At INEC Headquarters
Armed military personnel have taken over security duties at the Osun State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo ahead of the state’s governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.
According to Ireporter Online, fully armed soldiers were deployed around the commission’s headquarters on Monday, alongside three Armoured Personnel Carriers brought to reinforce security in the area.
Before the latest deployment, security around the INEC facility had largely been handled by anti-riot mobile policemen and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
A security source familiar with the development said the soldiers arrived in Osogbo on Sunday and officially commenced their duties on Monday morning.
The source added that the number of military personnel increased on Monday, while other security agencies remained at their respective duty posts.
Additional personnel from the police and NSCDC are also expected to join the security arrangement as activities surrounding the election intensify.
The heightened security presence comes as INEC and other relevant agencies make final preparations for the August 15 governorship election.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Public Relations Officer of INEC, Musa Olurode, said the commission had completed almost all activities outlined in its timetable for the election.
Olurode stated that 12 of the 13 scheduled activities had already been concluded, leaving only the actual conduct of the election.
He further disclosed that sensitive electoral materials would be distributed to the various local government areas on Thursday, ahead of Saturday’s voting.
The commission has maintained that it is fully prepared for the election, while security agencies continue to strengthen arrangements to ensure a safe and orderly electoral process across the state.
