Otti Ignites Stadium Revolution in Abia, Orders Rapid Upgrade of Umuahia Arena
According to iReporter Online, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has finalized plans to upgrade the Umuahia Township Stadium, positioning it as a temporary home ground for the Abia Warriors Football Club and other local teams. The governor disclosed this during a meeting with the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, and his delegation at his country residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
Governor Otti stated that immediate approval had already been granted to commence the stadium’s rehabilitation, emphasizing that the objective is to elevate the facility to meet basic standards befitting a professional sports arena. He added that while the ongoing upgrades serve as a short-term measure, architectural designs are underway for a more comprehensive project — a modern stadium city in Umuahia, aimed at providing a sustainable long-term solution for sports development in the state.
He described sports, particularly football, as a vital tool for national unity, asserting that true governance entails creating positive impacts in the lives of citizens. Governor Otti also extended his congratulations to President Bola Tinubu for the commendable performance of Nigeria’s Super Falcons on the international stage.
In his remarks, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau praised the governor for his unwavering support of sports development, referring to Abia State as the undisputed “home of football” in Nigeria. Gusau highlighted the state’s impressive legacy, citing its back-to-back victories in continental competitions. He stressed that the story of Nigerian football would be incomplete without acknowledging Abia’s contributions.
Gusau also commended Abia Warriors as one of Nigeria’s top football clubs under Governor Otti’s leadership and appealed for urgent intervention in fixing the Umuahia stadium. He assured the state government of technical assistance from the NFF to ensure that the facility is restored to full operational capacity.
