Oyingbo Market Sh*ck: Local Govt Bans Overnight Sleeping
According to reports, the Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, Jubril Emilagba, has issued a directive prohibiting people from sleeping within Oyingbo Market, Lagos. The decision was announced during a security meeting with market executives and members on Friday, with Emilagba emphasizing the need to enhance safety and protect lives and property.
The chairman explained that the ban on overnight stays is a preventive security measure aimed at curbing criminal activities and safeguarding traders and their goods. He stated, “No one is permitted to sleep in the market. This directive is strictly for security reasons, to prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of the environment.”
Emilagba stressed that markets should serve as centres for lawful commercial activities rather than places for overnight habitation. He added that the local government would collaborate with relevant security agencies and market leadership to ensure full compliance.
“We are committed to ensuring that Oyingbo Market remains safe for traders, customers, and residents. Security agencies will be involved in enforcing this directive,” he said. The chairman also reiterated his administration’s commitment to regular engagement with market stakeholders, noting that collaboration with traders is key to maintaining a secure and orderly market environment.
In addition, Emilagba urged traders to register for the National Identification Number (NIN) and the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, describing both as critical tools for identity management and effective security planning. He also encouraged eligible traders to participate in the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) e-registration exercise to promote grassroots political inclusion.
