Peter Obi Urges National Assembly to Review Rivers State Emergency Rule
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has written an open letter to the National Assembly leaders, urging them to prioritize the interests of the people of Rivers State while considering the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu. In the letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, Obi warned that the president’s intervention in the Rivers State political crisis could foster impunity. He emphasized the critical role of the legislature in preventing any abuse of executive power, particularly through the separation of powers that safeguards democracy.
Obi called for a dispassionate and democratic approach to the ongoing situation, urging the National Assembly to act in the best interest of Rivers State’s residents and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and 27 members of the state assembly for six months. Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (retd.) was appointed as the sole administrator to oversee the state’s affairs.
