The Pope also emphasized the importance of Lebanon as a symbol of peaceful coexistence among its diverse religious communities and called for leadership that could guide the nation back to that role.

“I urgently appeal to all Lebanese politicians to elect a new president immediately,” he said. “Lebanon’s institutions must begin operating normally to implement necessary reforms and maintain its status as an example of peaceful cohabitation between different religions.”

Lebanon has been without a president since October 2022, following the expiration of President Michel Aoun’s term. Despite parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri scheduling the next presidential election for January 9, divisions among the country’s political factions, particularly between Hezbollah and its rivals, have prevented a consensus on a candidate.
