Pregnant Woman, One Other Killed In Kwara Church Collapse

A pregnant woman simply identified as Funmi and another aged woman, Iya Isanlu, both of Kajola village lost their lives after a rainstorm in Oko-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State, on Monday.

The incident, it was gathered, occurred on Sunday at Boluwarin Church in Kajola village during a torrential rainfall that led to the collapse of the worship centre.

No fewer than 10 other people reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries during the incident.

It was gathered the corpses of the deceased had been deposited in a mortuary while the injured have been taken to various hospitals within the community for treatment.

Speaking with Daily Trust on Wednesday, the spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, Babawale Afolabi, confirmed the incident and death of the two women.

Afolabi said: “At about 4.47 pm on a sad day, there was a heavy rainstorm that claimed the lives of two persons in Kajola town, Oke-Ero local government area of Kwara State in a Church called Boluwarin Church…

“A pregnant woman called Funmi as well as an aged woman called Iya-Isanlu were killed by the rainstorm.

“The corpses of the victims have been kept in the mortuary while over 10 wounded victims have been taken to the hospital,” he noted.

He added that the rainstorm also destroyed electrical poles in Egosi-Ile, thereby plunging the community into total darkness.

“The rooftop of Odo-Owa police station was also blown -off by the rainstorm,” Afolabi also said.
