President Tinubu Pushes for Stronger Ties with Brazil, Calls for Direct Flights
President Bola Tinubu has called for a significant enhancement in Nigeria-Brazil relations, underscoring the need for direct flights between the two countries. This appeal was made during a formal meeting with Carlos Jose Areias, Brazil’s newly appointed ambassador to Nigeria.
In the meeting, President Tinubu recalled his discussions with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa earlier this year. He expressed Nigeria’s strong interest in deepening bilateral ties and exploring mutual economic benefits, particularly in light of Brazil’s upcoming G20 presidency in 2024.
A key focus of the discussion was the potential for Brazilian investments in Nigeria’s dairy farming sector. President Tinubu voiced optimism about advancing these opportunities and emphasized the strategic necessity of direct flights to enhance business and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Ambassador Areias responded by conveying President Lula’s eagerness to host President Tinubu at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19, 2024. Additionally, he extended an invitation for Nigeria to join Brazil’s Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, a major initiative of Brazil’s G20 presidency aimed at eradicating extreme poverty by 2030.
Highlighting Brazil’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria, Ambassador Areias noted that trade between the two countries had been around $10 billion a decade ago and expressed a strong desire to significantly increase this figure. He emphasized the importance of Africa to President Lula and Nigeria’s central role in that context.
This renewed push for closer collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil aims to bolster economic development and enhance bilateral relations, reflecting a shared commitment to mutual growth and prosperity.
