(AMGA 2024) in Abuja, emphasizing the need for collaboration and shared responsibility in tackling security threats.
Speaking at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, noted that no single nation can overcome its security challenges alone. He stressed that the well-being and safety of African people require a united front.
“Our collective safety depends on our unity,” he said. “The security issues we face cannot be resolved through force alone. We must strengthen the partnerships and alliances that bind us.”
Tinubu highlighted the importance of the AMGA as not only a sporting event but also a crucial platform for fostering military cooperation and solidarity across the continent. He commended the revival of the games, first initiated in Nairobi, Kenya, over two decades ago.
“This event is a symbol of the cooperation between military institutions across Africa,” Tinubu added. “Today, we reaffirm what we can achieve when we stand together—not just as neighbours, but as guardians of this continent.”
The President also praised the leadership of General C.G. Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, and Major General M. Abdullahi, President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), for their role in reviving the games. Tinubu emphasized that sports play a key role in building physical fitness, discipline, and resilience, which are essential traits for Africa’s military personnel.
Earlier, General Musa explained that the games serve as more than just a showcase of athleticism; they are an opportunity to demonstrate the strong bonds that unite the African armed forces. He urged the 1,625 athletes and officials participating in the games to embody the spirit of sportsmanship, fostering friendship and cooperation.
Major General Abdullahi also reflected on the significance of hosting the games in Nigeria, calling it a realization of OSMA’s founding vision to promote unity, solidarity, and friendship across African military forces.
The opening ceremony included a calisthenics display, performances by various artists, the hoisting of OSMA and AMGA flags, an athlete oath-taking, and the symbolic lighting of the game torch by Vice President Shettima.
