Real Reason Atiku Went To Presidential Tribunal To Challenge Tinubu’s Victory – PDP Chieftain

Segun Showunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has emphasized that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, opted for the legal route to address his grievances at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal due to his commitment to democracy.

Speaking in Abuja during a discussion with journalists on Sunday, Showunmi underscored the importance of the judiciary’s role as the last hope of the common people and called for the judiciary to fulfill its responsibilities as it prepares to deliver its judgment on the petitions challenging the declaration of President Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25 election.

Showunmi acknowledged that while Atiku had other options available, his democratic principles guided him to choose the path of legality and civilized discourse to voice his concerns.

Showunmi expressed, “Atiku has committed no wrongdoing; he upholds democratic values. His choice to remain a democrat is the only step he has taken.

His decision not to pursue destabilization through extremist groups demonstrates his democratic stance. The global community and even our forebears are eagerly awaiting this verdict.”

Addressing the state of democracy in African countries like Mali, Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, Showunmi emphasized that people’s frustration arises when the will of the populace is overridden by those in power.

He stressed that the judiciary plays a vital role in preserving the will of the people and ensuring national cohesion.

Showunmi also referenced Nigeria’s history of independence, highlighting the contribution of individuals from various regions to the nation’s foundation. He indirectly criticized President Tinubu, who has advocated for the endurance of hardships caused by subsidy removal from petrol.

He remarked, “Advocating for endurance without rectifying illegality is inconsistent. We have the paradox of ‘Eyes on the judiciary.’

The judiciary is not isolated from societal events. Judicial officers’ families are also part of society. Upholding the will of the people is often synonymous with upholding the will of God.”

He concluded by emphasizing that the global community is watching Nigeria closely and urged the judiciary to act in the best interest of society, asserting that if democracy falters, the judiciary can help mend it, but if the judiciary fails, the entire society is at risk.
