The cultural tapestry of Nigeria is woven with threads of history, and in a recent visit to Lagos, the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, unraveled a historical revelation that stirred controversy and piqued curiosity. During an honored call to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the revered monarch made a statement that challenged conventional narratives. CONTINUE READING
“I just want to mention something that will drag me into the controversy of Benin and Lagos, but I can’t help but say it. It is a mystery in history books that Benin founded Lagos,” Oba Ewuare II asserted during the visit.
The revelation, though bold, sheds light on a historical connection that may not be widely known. The Oba emphasized that while some may question or dispute the claim, the veracity lies in historical records. He alluded to the fact that, according to historical accounts, parts of Lagos, if not the entirety, were founded by Benin ancestors.
“When some people hear it now, they will start saying, ‘What is the Oba saying again?’ But it is true. Go and check out the records. Maybe not all over Lagos as we know it now, but some parts were founded by my ancestors. The Oba of Lagos will say so; everybody knows. But the source of Lagos is Benin, whether the Ooni of Ife likes it or not,” he confidently stated. CONTINUE READING
The Oba’s primary purpose for the visit was to tour the J. Randle Center for Arts & Culture, showcasing the rich Yoruba heritage. However, his unexpected historical revelation added a layer of complexity to the longstanding narratives surrounding the founding of Lagos.
As Nigerians and historians delve into the annals of history to verify this claim, the Oba’s words have sparked discussions and debates about the interconnectedness of Nigerian cultures and the historical influences that have shaped the nation. The rich cultural heritage of Nigeria continues to unveil surprises and nuances, reminding its people of the intertwined histories that have shaped the nation we know today.
