The situation has become a pressing concern for community leaders, who observe that these women, eager to start anew, are unable to attract suitors. Although the exact number of unmarried women among the surrendered insurgents remains unknown, community leaders receive messages from them expressing their desire for marriage or remarriage.
Ward head Modu Grema Wakil of Old Maiduguri shares the community’s worry that the lack of marital prospects could lead these women back to radicalization. He emphasizes the importance of finding spouses for them to prevent a potential regression into violence.
While societal stigma against them may be diminishing, the fear lingers that potential suitors doubt the sincerity of their repentance and fear the risk of violence. To address this issue, Wakil urges the Borno State government to create a database of these women and facilitate marriages through collaboration with organizations like the Allamin Foundation.
Zuwaira Gambo, the Borno State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, acknowledges the importance of marriage in stabilizing these women in society and pledges government support in creating the necessary infrastructure for matchmaking and reintegration efforts.
