Reps Set To Debate Insecurity And Flooding Upon Tuesday Resumption

Ahead of the National Assembly’s resumption on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, critical national issues are set for discussion in the House of Representatives.

Sources tell Ireporteronline that the Green Chamber will address topics including insecurity, flooding, and the fuel crisis.

After a seven-week annual recess beginning July 23, the National Assembly was initially slated to reconvene on September 17. However, the Senate Clerk, Chinedu Akubueze, and House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, announced last week that the resumption would be delayed until September 24, without providing a reason for the change.

According to a confidential source from the National Assembly, insecurity continues to be a pressing concern despite recent military successes against insurgents. The source, who requested anonymity, highlighted that during the recess, numerous attacks occurred in the North, resulting in loss of life and property.

“Don’t forget that in August, gunmen attacked Kaduna, killing local vigilante members and farmers. Additionally, nearly ten people were killed in a mosque attack in Kaduna,” the source noted, emphasizing that similar violence has affected other northern states like Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Zamfara, Taraba, and Niger. Lawmakers from these areas are expected to address these tragedies and advocate for enhanced safety measures.

The official also pointed to the severe flooding that recently impacted Borno, Zamfara, and Yobe states, leading to loss of lives and property.

Already, Borno State Representative Mukhtar Betara has pledged to seek federal assistance for Maiduguri flood victims upon legislative resumption, having contributed N100 million to aid the state government’s relief efforts.

The source mentioned that while Maiduguri’s flooding has gained attention, other affected states like Adamawa and Yobe also suffered significant losses and will likely be discussed when the House reconvenes.

Additionally, the recent rise in petrol prices may prompt discussions within the House.

The agenda for Tuesday’s session remains uncertain, as members will need time to settle in following the complex’s fumigation on Friday in preparation for resumption.

“There is the fuel crisis to consider, but it’s possible we may see a brief session followed by another adjournment,” the source added, highlighting the challenges of returning to full legislative duties.
