Rising Cases Of Burglary, Human Trafficking Spark Concern In Ogun Magboro Community
Residents of the Magboro area in Ogun State have expressed deep concern over a surge in burglary incidents and suspected human trafficking activities within their neighborhood, particularly in Happyland Estate.
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the situation has created growing unease among community members, who believe the crimes are being perpetrated from within, rather than by outsiders….READ MORE…
Community members claim to have traced the activities to a specific residence allegedly owned by a high-ranking officer in a security agency, which they say has made it difficult to take decisive action.
Leaders of the Happyland Estate Community Development Association (CDA) voiced their worries during interviews with NAN, citing an increase in unfamiliar and suspicious individuals moving into the area.
Mr. Mose Mutwang, a resident and executive member of the CDA, noted that the incidents spiked between December 2024 and February 2025, prompting the community to escalate the matter to the Warewa Police Station, located along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“We observed a steady increase in burglary incidents starting in December. By February, we reported the matter to the Warewa Police. Following this, we held an emergency CDA meeting and identified a house on Unity Street accommodating several unidentified individuals,” Mutwang said.
He described the property in question as operating like an unlicensed guesthouse, raising concerns about its legality and the potential risks it poses to residents.
“The building lacks basic security and is not being used as a typical residential facility. The owner doesn’t live there, and the environment is highly vulnerable,” he added.
Another resident, Mr. Adekunle Sogbehin, highlighted further troubling developments, including possible human trafficking linked to the same property. He recounted an encounter with a young Cameroonian man residing in the house who claimed to have been misled with false promises of traveling to Europe.
“The young man revealed he paid a substantial amount to an agent with the hope of reaching Europe but ended up stranded in Magboro. He now relies on his mother for support and is clearly in distress,” Sogbehin explained.
He urged government authorities and security agencies to act swiftly, stating that the house reportedly accommodates about 30 individuals in a single flat, with inadequate sleeping arrangements—raising suspicions of either trafficking or cybercrime recruitment.
“This situation is alarming. It’s affecting our community’s safety and reputation. We need urgent intervention,” he stressed.
Echoing these concerns, the CDA Chairman, Mr. Bolade Awopetu, appealed to the government to investigate the matter and safeguard the community.
“I visited the location myself, and some of the occupants admitted they are unable to leave. Since their arrival, we’ve noticed a rise in crime. We need intervention to restore peace,” Awopetu said.
In response, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, advised the community to submit a formal petition to the Commissioner of Police to enable appropriate action.
