Navalny, a prominent critic of the Kremlin, was serving a 19-year prison sentence in a remote penal colony when news of his death emerged, sparking grief and outrage among his supporters.

Spontaneous memorials sprung up across the country as people gathered to lay flowers and pay their respects to Navalny. However, the peaceful gatherings quickly escalated as police moved in to disperse the crowds and detain participants.

According to the OVD-Info rights group, more than 100 people were detained in at least 10 cities, including Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, and Tver. In Saint Petersburg alone, 64 individuals were reportedly detained, highlighting the widespread nature of the crackdown.

In Moscow, where Navalny’s headquarters is located, 11 people were detained as police sought to prevent any large-scale protests or demonstrations in the city center. Russian authorities had issued warnings against attending such gatherings, citing strict anti-dissent laws that criminalize protests without official authorization.

The arrests underscore the continued suppression of dissent in Russia and the government’s intolerance of any form of opposition. Despite facing harsh consequences, Navalny’s supporters remain determined to voice their opposition to the Kremlin’s policies and demand justice for their fallen leader.
