Safety Investigation Bureau Now Under Presidency’s Watch
According to Ireporter Online, the Presidency has placed the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) under its direct supervision, removing it from the oversight of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development. The directive, approved by President Bola Tinubu on March 5, 2026, was communicated to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for immediate implementation on March 11, 2026.
As part of the restructuring, the Attorney-General of the Federation has been instructed to amend the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau Establishment Act of 2022 to reflect the new administrative arrangement, with the proposed changes to be submitted to the National Assembly for legislative approval.
The NSIB, established under Act No. 35 of 2022, replaced the former Accident Investigation Bureau, which previously focused exclusively on aviation-related accidents. Unlike its predecessor, the NSIB has a multimodal mandate, overseeing accident investigations across air, marine, rail, and tracked vehicle systems, making it Nigeria’s sole authority for comprehensive transportation accident investigations.
