SDP Is an Extension of Tinubu’s Political Influence – Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has dismissed the notion that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) can be used as a platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. During an interview with TVC on Sunday, Sowore argued that any political coalition formed against Tinubu through the SDP would struggle to achieve its objective. He further suggested that former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent move to the SDP might have been orchestrated to gauge the party’s dynamics.

“One thing I can say with certainty is that the SDP is closely linked to Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It is essentially an extension of his political network. Unless he has distanced himself from it, the party remains under his influence,” Sowore stated.

He went on to speculate that El-Rufai’s entry into the SDP might have been a strategic maneuver, saying, “I have a feeling that El-Rufai’s move was a test. However, he might have encountered internal resistance within the party. It appears that some key SDP members anticipated this development and acted accordingly.”

Sowore also expressed doubts about the number of politicians willing to defect to the SDP, implying that potential defectors might have realized that the party is not as independent as it seems.

“I believe this coalition is not primarily about winning elections; rather, it is about negotiations and political distractions. The intent seems to be creating an illusion of opposition to the APC, whereas, in reality, many of these individuals are still aligned with the ruling party,” he concluded.
