See The Countries Nigeria Lost AFCON 2027 Hosting Right To
Nigeria lost its bid, in partnership with Benin Republic, to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The hosting rights were secured by a joint bid from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Morocco was announced as the host for the 2025 edition. Morocco last hosted the AFCON in 1988, and while initially chosen for the 2015 tournament, it was postponed due to the Ebola virus, leading to the stripping of hosting rights by CAF. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania’s bid prevailed, bringing the tournament back to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia hosted in 1976.

CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, expressed pride in Morocco’s successful bid. Algeria’s unexpected withdrawal from the 2027 race created an opportunity for other contenders. Motsepe explained that the withdrawal was related to Algeria’s football development strategy.
The decision to award the tournament to East Africa aims to promote infrastructure and stadium development, inspiring enthusiasm among young people.
While initially hesitant about successive tournaments in the same region, Motsepe and CAF acknowledged the challenge of limited suitable hosts across the continent. Ivory Coast is set to host the 2023 Cup of Nations, rescheduled to January and February 2024 due to the rainy season. This timing, amid the European club season, presents challenges for star players who will participate. The tournament has evolved from a three-team event in 1957 to a 24-team competition since 2019, garnering a global TV audience.
Egypt remains the most successful nation in AFCON history with seven titles, including three consecutive wins from 2006. Cameroon has triumphed five times, and Ghana is a four-time champion. The upcoming edition will feature the top 16 African countries according to the latest FIFA rankings, led by 2022 World Cup semi-finalists Morocco.
