The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Lauretta Onochie, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Assistant on Social Media, and 12 others as Chairman and board members of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

Onochie, along with 13 other candidates for NDDC board positions, was screened by the Senate and House Niger Delta Committees on Thursday.

Buhari had written to the Senate requesting that the appointment of the Chairman and Members of the Commission’s Board be confirmed in accordance with Section 2(2)(a) of the NDDC (Establishment) Act.

This was the second time Buhari forwarded a list of NDDC board nominees for confirmation. In 2021, he sent the first list of nominees to the board, which the Senate screened and confirmed.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan, on the other hand, stated that the President’s decision to send another list of nominees for confirmation was due to a flaw in the previous compilation.

Some committee members objected to Onochie’s nomination, citing the fact that she is not from an oil-producing community in Delta State, which violates the NDDC Act and precludes her from chairing the commission.
