Invoking Order 41 of the Senate Rules, Senator Abiodun, a newcomer to the Senate, formally announced the passing of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan and proposed renaming a committee room after the late monarch.

However, this proposal elicited laughter throughout the chamber, as Senators, who had just been discussing the “horrific killing of 16 soldiers” in a motion brought by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, quickly shifted from solemnity to amusement.

This reaction may have been prompted by the unconventional nature of naming a committee room or chamber after an individual, which is unprecedented in the history of democracy.

Despite the request to rename the Senate Committee room, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, opted to proceed with observing a one-minute silence as a mark of respect.

The esteemed monarch passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, after a two-year reign as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan.
