The lingering internal conflict within the Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has culminated in the dissolution of the Solomon Agwanana-led State Working Committee (SWC) by the South-South Zonal Working Committee (ZWC).

It is understood that Agwanana’s leadership had the backing of Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri.

In swift response, the ZWC appointed its Zonal Secretary, George Turnah, as chairman of a newly constituted caretaker committee to take charge of the party’s affairs in Bayelsa.

This decision was reached during a ZWC meeting held on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. According to a statement by Zonal Publicity Secretary Prince Etim Isong, the SWC was dissolved over “gross misconduct” and its inability to effectively manage the internal strife plaguing the party.

The ZWC criticized the Agwanana-led committee for failing to resolve the party’s internal issues, a shortcoming that has prolonged the crisis in Bayelsa’s PDP chapter.

The Zonal Committee also made leadership changes in the Edo State chapter, replacing the caretaker chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, with Nosa Ogieva.

Isong noted that the appointment of new caretaker committees in Bayelsa and Edo was a strategic move made in the party’s best interest, following careful evaluation of party activities in both states.

“The dissolution of the Bayelsa SWC and the Edo caretaker committee became necessary due to various acts of gross misconduct and a general failure to manage internal party affairs,” Isong stated.

He added that the actions taken violated the PDP constitution, citing poor performance in the Edo governorship elections and ongoing leadership challenges as contributing factors.

The ZWC reaffirmed its commitment to rebuilding and strengthening the PDP’s presence in both states, citing specific articles from the party’s constitution to justify its decisions.
