The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is intensifying efforts to bring back former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential contender, Peter Obi, into its fold ahead of the 2027 general elections

    Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, made this revelation during an appearance on Arise News, emphasizing that Obi remains a valuable political asset. “Peter Obi is our product, and the PDP indeed wants to get him back. He is a very great capital for any political party, and any political party that will have him will be to their advantage,” Abdullahi said.

Obi, who served as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019, defected in 2022 to join the Labour Party, where he secured the presidential ticket and ran in the 2023 elections. Despite facing what Abdullahi described as significant electoral manipulation, Obi managed to poll over six million votes and emerged victorious in twelve states, including the Federal Capital Territory—an impressive feat that placed him third behind Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.

According to iReporter Online, the PDP views Obi’s performance as a testament to his growing national appeal and electability. Abdullahi noted that, “The truth of the matter is, if he had not gone the way he did in the last dispensation and proved that mettle to generate over six million votes despite the rigging and frustration of his chances in many states — Peter Obi is truly a political capital, no doubt about it.”

Obi, while still officially aligned with the Labour Party, has recently expressed openness to collaboration under the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition framework. According to iReporter Online, this new political maneuvering has further fueled speculations that Obi’s return to PDP might be closer than expected, especially as the party works to consolidate forces ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate in the last two elections, has reportedly resigned from the party, adding new urgency to the PDP’s reconfiguration strategy ahead of 2027.
