Tension briefly flared in Ado-Ekiti over the weekend when unidentified thugs stormed the venue of the Opeyemi David Falegan Foundation (ODF) fuel relief initiative, allegedly attempting to disrupt the free distribution exercise. The initiative, spearheaded by the UK-based philanthropist, has long catered to vulnerable groups by offering free fuel, cooking gas, JAMB forms, and financial support to widows, the elderly, and persons with disabilities.

According to IReporter Online, beneficiaries and loyal supporters of the foundation resisted the invasion, ensuring that the noble cause was not derailed by what they described as a politically motivated assault. The attackers reportedly questioned whether Falegan was secretly nursing a governorship ambition, despite the fact that he neither resides in Nigeria nor holds any political office.

Comrade Adewumi Francis, media aide to the foundation, recounted the tense moment, stating that the assailants stormed the site, harassed the crowd, and demanded that the event be halted. However, the determination of ODF’s supporters prevailed, and the programme continued smoothly, impacting hundreds of commercial tricycle operators across Ado-Ekiti and its environs.

The fuel distribution scheme was a deliberate effort by the foundation to cushion the economic strain faced by ordinary Nigerians, especially transport workers whose earnings have been severely affected by rising costs. Falegan emphasized his commitment to standing with the people and declared that the burdens of Ekiti’s tricycle riders would continue to receive his full attention and assistance.

Several beneficiaries praised Falegan’s consistent efforts, hailing him as a selfless humanitarian and a beacon of hope for the masses. A female participant, Adedayo Kemi, who narrowly escaped assault during the incident, described him as “a true friend of the poor” and lauded his compassion despite not holding any formal government position.

Others like Olumide Ojo and Gbenga Olatunde affirmed that the support they received would significantly bolster their livelihoods, pledging continued solidarity with the foundation. Another beneficiary, Fred Ayodele, expressed astonishment that such impactful interventions could be led by one individual without state involvement, urging other Ekiti elites to emulate Falegan’s commitment to societal upliftment.
