Simeone Breaks Silence On Lookman Sub As Atlético Lose Copa Del Rey Final

According to Ireporter Online, Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has defended his decision to substitute Ademola Lookman during Saturday’s Copa del Rey final defeat to Real Sociedad, insisting the change was driven by tactical considerations despite widespread debate.

Lookman continued his impressive form in Spain by scoring in his second consecutive match, restoring parity in the 18th minute after Real Sociedad’s Ander Barrenetxea struck just 14 seconds into the contest. However, Real Sociedad regained the lead before half-time after Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the penalty spot, following a foul by goalkeeper Juan Musso on Gonçalo Guedes.

Simeone withdrew Lookman shortly after the hour mark, a decision that came as Atlético searched for a breakthrough. The team eventually responded in the 83rd minute when Julián Álvarez found the equaliser, forcing extra time after a tightly contested encounter.

Neither side managed to secure a winner after 120 minutes, and the final was decided by penalties, where Real Sociedad emerged victorious with a 4-3 shootout win to lift the trophy.

Explaining his decision after the match, Simeone stated that the substitution was intended to reshape Atlético’s attacking approach. He noted that bringing on Alexander Sørloth allowed for a different attacking structure, while Álex Baena was repositioned to the left flank as part of the tactical adjustment.

Meanwhile, Spanish outlet Marca reported that Lookman was substituted partly due to physical discomfort, revealing that the forward experienced sharp pain in his adductor muscle and is expected to undergo medical assessment to determine the severity of the issue.

Despite the defeat, Lookman continued his strong impact at the club, increasing his tally to 11 goal contributions since joining during the winter transfer window. He also made history by becoming the first Nigerian to score in a Copa del Rey final since Finidi George in 1997.

The loss ends Atlético Madrid’s hopes of domestic silverware this season, with their La Liga challenge already concluded. Attention now turns to their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash against Arsenal scheduled for April 29.
