According to Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS), six suspects have been apprehended in connection with the alleged “hijacking and murder” of Fleurs. The 24-year-old defender was fatally shot approximately a week ago while he was at a gas station in Johannesburg, refueling his car.

Reports indicate that Fleurs was waiting in his Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI when two assailants forcibly removed him from the vehicle at gunpoint. Tragically, they shot him before fleeing the scene in his car.

Following intensive investigative efforts, authorities located the stolen vehicle on Monday, leading to the subsequent arrest of six individuals linked to the heinous crime. These suspects are believed to be part of a criminal syndicate operating in Johannesburg’s Gauteng province and have purported connections to multiple car hijackings and murder cases within the city.

While these arrests mark a significant development in the case, the police spokesperson has emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend any additional suspects involved.

The murder of Luke Fleurs underscores the pervasive issue of violent crime in South Africa, which has become a focal point in the lead-up to the country’s forthcoming general elections in May 2024.
