Speaker Abbas Warns After Zaria–Kano Tanker Explosion: “This Was Avoidable”

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed deep concern over the recent tanker explosion on the Zaria–Kano highway, describing the incident as an avoidable tragedy that underscores the need for stricter road safety compliance.

The explosion occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Monday in the Dan Magaji area of Zaria when a Liquefied Natural Gas (LPG) tanker travelling to Kano suffered a tyre blowout and collided with the rear of an empty fuel tanker. The impact triggered a massive blaze that initially sparked fears of multiple fatalities.

However, Zaria Local Government Chairman, Engineer Jamil Muhammad, confirmed there were no deaths, clarifying that four people sustained injuries and were immediately taken to hospital for treatment. He also dismissed earlier reports that two commercial Golf vehicles were involved in the accident, stating that no such vehicles were part of the crash.

The Kaduna State Police Command, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Federal Fire Service also confirmed the absence of fatalities. FRSC officials, working with local authorities, quickly managed traffic to prevent gridlock, while firefighters battled the blaze to avert further destruction.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Speaker Tajudeen described the event as unfortunate and urged motorists to prioritise adherence to safety standards. He stressed that proper road discipline and maintenance can prevent such disasters.

“This accident is a stark reminder of the need for greater vigilance on our roads. Incidents like these are avoidable when proper safety standards are adhered to,” he said, calling on drivers to respect regulations to protect lives and property.
