Subsidy Removal: What Governors Are Saying Concerning FG Palliative Measures

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has expressed dismay and concern over the federal government’s inadequate planning and response to the removal of fuel subsidies, which has exacerbated the difficulties faced by Nigerians, causing hardship and suffering among the populace.

Speaking in Benin City, Obaseki voiced his alarm regarding the mismanagement of the nation’s economy. He highlighted that the country’s situation is deteriorating due to flawed policies by the central government.

In contrast, Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, disagreed with his Edo state counterpart’s views on the federal government’s measures to alleviate the impacts of oil subsidy removal.

Through his press secretary, Christian Aburime, Soludo asserted that Nigerians should embrace these measures, as they are intended to assist the most vulnerable citizens.

He stated, “The recent palliative measures by the federal government will, at the very least, start to alleviate the suffering of the masses, especially the most vulnerable groups in society. We believe that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intentions are genuine, and everyone should support his efforts to improve the country for all Nigerians.”

Conversely, Niger State Governor, Umar Mohammed Bago, argued that the proposed palliative measures are unsustainable. During the distribution of farming inputs to farmers, Bago acknowledged the assistance from President Ahmed Bola Tinubu but expressed concerns about the long-term viability of the palliative scheme. He emphasized the need to reinvigorate the economy through agricultural activities.

Bayelsa State Governor, Diri, questioned why any state government would oppose the federal government’s offer of palliatives. He emphasized that if the federal government is providing assistance to the states, the states should not reject it.

Delta State Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, expressed appreciation for the federal government’s actions but also hoped for further palliatives from President Bola Tinubu to alleviate the hardships resulting from fuel subsidy removal. He underscored the challenges Nigerians are facing due to the economic situation.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, defended President Tinubu’s intentions behind the palliative measures, describing them as pro-masses and impactful. He criticized labeling the program as deceptive, emphasizing that the implementation has begun and its success depends on how states handle the distribution.

Governor Sule highlighted the commencement of the distribution of palliatives in his state and stressed that its success would hinge on the effective management by the beneficiary state governments.
