Taiwo Akerele Joins Minister Atiku Bagudu in Advocating For Senior Citizens’ Welfare

Amidst a gathering of notable leaders and advocates for social reform, Taiwo Akerele, the former Chief of Staff to Edo State Government, emerged as a prominent voice advocating for the welfare of senior citizens. His presence alongside Honorable Minister for Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, at the National Senior Citizens Center (NSCC) event underscored a unified commitment to address the pressing issues surrounding ageing demographics in Nigeria.

The occasion, centered on evaluating the efficacy of the National Ageing Policy, facilitated an extensive dialogue on the imperative of implementing the national senior citizens Act nationwide. Drawing insights from discussions with 36 commissioners for social welfare, the consensus was clear: governmental efforts must evolve beyond temporary ‘palliative’ measures to ensure lasting impact on the lives of elderly citizens.

Guided by Dr. (Mrs.) Emem Omokaro, the Director-General of NSCC, participants emphasized the urgency of substantive action. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, represented by its Permanent Secretary, reinforced its support for initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being and dignity of senior citizens.
