Tensions Escalate in Ogun as Governor Abiodun Targets Senator Gbenga Daniel Ahead of 2027

Days after the failed attempt to demolish Senator Gbenga Daniel’s luxury hotel, Governor Dapo Abiodun appears to have opened a new front in what is shaping up to be a fierce political rivalry ahead of the 2027 elections, according to IReporter Online.

In a bold political move, the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), under Mr Abiodun’s leadership, announced the suspension of Senator Daniel—his former ally turned adversary—for alleged anti-party activities and misconduct.

The statement, signed by the party’s publicity secretary, Nuberu Olufemi, also confirmed the suspension of House of Assembly member Kunle Folarin.

The duo was accused of coercing party members into withdrawing a petition perceived to be unfavourable to them, while also allegedly ignoring disciplinary summons from the party hierarchy.

However, the APC did not provide details on the specific misconduct or the dates of the disciplinary invitations.

“In exercise of its powers, the State Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State hereby affirms the suspension of Senator Gbenga Daniel and Hon. Kunle Folarin by their respective wards for alleged anti-party activities,” the statement read.

According to IReporter Online, this latest development comes amid rising tension within the party and a growing belief that Mr Abiodun is preparing to contest the Ogun East senatorial seat in 2027—a position currently occupied by Mr Daniel.

The senator, who governed Ogun State from 2003 to 2011 and was elected to the National Assembly in 2023, remains a significant political force, especially in the Ogun East district, where he enjoys deep-rooted grassroots loyalty.

Political insiders say Governor Abiodun, determined to secure the APC senatorial ticket in 2027, views Senator Daniel as a major obstacle to that ambition. Sources close to the party hierarchy reveal that Abiodun believes Daniel’s removal from the APC is the clearest path to achieving his senatorial goal.

The souring of relations between both men is widely traced back to the aftermath of the 2019 elections.

Senator Daniel had supported Abiodun’s successful gubernatorial campaign, but their alliance deteriorated shortly after, according to IReporter Online.

Critics have accused Mr Abiodun of using state influence and party machinery to undermine his former benefactor, with the attempted demolition of Daniel’s hotel property serving as a symbolic flashpoint in their feud.

Despite the suspension, Daniel’s camp has remained largely silent.

His media aide, Stephen Oluyide, has yet to confirm whether the senator will contest the party’s decision or explore an appeal process.

For now, the Ogun APC is clearly fractured, with this suspension signalling not just a political disagreement but an all-out war between two heavyweight figures battling for dominance in 2027.
