In an interview with the ireporteronline, Oba Akanbi reiterated that Sharia law has been practiced in the South-West for over a century, pointing to the existence of Sharia-compliant banking systems and the Sharia college in Iwo as evidence of its longstanding presence. He emphasized that Sharia law is designed specifically for Muslims, to address issues like inheritance, marriage, and divorce, without affecting non-Muslims.

The monarch further stressed, “Sharia law is exclusively for Muslims, and it does not impose itself on anyone outside the faith. People are free to choose their religion, but Muslims must be allowed to practice their beliefs.” His comments were in response to the heated debate sparked by the proposed establishment of a Sharia court in Oyo town, which some fear could disrupt the region’s cultural and religious harmony.

While supporters of the Sharia court see it as a right, others, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), have voiced strong opposition. Amid these tensions, Oba Akanbi stood firm, declaring that no government can strip Muslims of their rights, and called for an acceptance of religious freedom.
